It’s very common for first pregnancies to end in miscarriage. In fact, 50-60% of pregnancies end in miscarriage before the woman even knows she’s pregnant. Chemical pregnancy is the medical term for a pregnancy that ends in miscarriage in the very early stages. A chemical pregnancy fails before a fetal heartbeat can be heard, even if a positive pregnancy test result was previously obtained.

Most chemical pregnancies occur because of problems, usually of a chromosomal nature, with the developing fetus. In addition, there could be other contributing factors to an early miscarriage, such as inadequate uterine lining, fibroids, low hormone levels, and possibly infection.

Unfortunately, there are no ways to stop a chemical pregnancy. If you have had recurrent miscarriages, then your doctor should investigate the source and treatments available to you.
